MLB Restricts AI-Assisted Dugout Decision-Making Amid Integrity Concerns

Major League Baseball has imposed new restrictions on the use of league-issued dugout iPads after discovering that a number of clubs were using custom applications connected to generative artificial intelligence to assist with in-game strategy. The policy, which took effect at the start of the second half of the 2026 season after a June 11 memorandum from league officials, blocks teams from accessing custom software capable of recommending substitutions, pitch selection, and other tactical decisions traditionally left to managers, coaches, and players. League officials indicated that while no club was found to have violated existing rules, the rapid expansion of AI-assisted decision-making prompted preemptive action to preserve competitive integrity before technology fundamentally altered the human element of professional baseball.

      Key Takeaways

      • MLB moved before widespread abuse occurred. League officials concluded that AI-assisted in-game strategy had advanced far enough to justify new restrictions before it became an entrenched competitive advantage.
      • AI is rapidly expanding beyond analytics into real-time decision-making. Teams had reportedly begun using customized applications to generate recommendations for pitch calling, substitutions, and other tactical choices during live games.
      • Professional sports are becoming an early battleground for AI governance. MLB’s decision highlights a broader challenge facing institutions across society: determining where technology should enhance human performance and where it should stop short of replacing human judgment.

      In-Depth

Major League Baseball’s latest technology crackdown is about far more than tablets in dugouts. It represents one of the clearest acknowledgments yet that artificial intelligence is beginning to blur the line between assisting coaches and effectively making strategic decisions for them. While baseball has embraced analytics for decades, generative AI introduces a fundamentally different capability by synthesizing live information and recommending actions in real time.

According to league officials, some organizations had expanded the functionality of league-issued iPads through custom applications that provided recommendations on pitch sequencing, substitutions, and other tactical decisions. Although MLB determined that clubs had technically remained within existing regulations, officials concluded that waiting until AI became deeply embedded throughout the league would make meaningful oversight far more difficult. Rather than punishing teams retroactively, the league chose to establish clearer boundaries before an AI arms race developed.

The decision also reflects a broader cultural debate surrounding artificial intelligence. Sports have traditionally celebrated the instincts of managers, the preparation of coaching staffs, and the split-second judgment of players. Allowing increasingly sophisticated AI systems to influence those decisions risks transforming competition into a contest between competing software platforms rather than competing baseball minds.

From a conservative perspective, MLB’s action demonstrates that technology should remain a tool rather than become the decision-maker itself. Innovation has undeniable value, but preserving the integrity of competition requires clear limits when technological advantages begin overshadowing human skill and accountability. Fans pay to watch athletes and managers compete—not algorithms. By acting before AI became indispensable inside every dugout, MLB has attempted to preserve the human element that has defined professional baseball for generations while still allowing teams to benefit from legitimate pregame analysis and traditional statistical preparation.
