      • Disney is partnering with OpenArt to develop AI-generated lyric videos, beginning with “Go the Distance” from its 1997 animated film “Hercules.”
      • The technology allows Disney to generate and revise visual concepts in hours rather than weeks, potentially reducing production costs and expanding its music catalog’s digital reach.
      • Disney’s embrace of AI comes amid copyright litigation against other AI companies, highlighting the distinction between authorized creative technology and alleged intellectual property infringement.

Disney is testing artificial intelligence to develop lyric videos for songs from its music catalog, beginning with “Go the Distance” from the 1997 animated film “Hercules.” Under a commercial arrangement with OpenArt, Disney’s creative teams can upload music and generate visual storyboards informed by a song’s lyrics, mood and emotional tone. Artists can revise the concepts before deciding how to proceed. Disney says the process could compress weeks of experimentation into hours, potentially giving older songs new exposure on digital platforms.

The partnership emerged from Disney’s 2026 Accelerator program, which selected five companies working with artificial intelligence and robotics. OpenArt markets tools that produce synchronized lyric videos from uploaded recordings and visual instructions. Disney’s adoption comes amid its copyright disputes with other AI developers, including Midjourney and MiniMax. The company is pursuing a dual strategy: exploring AI production efficiencies while challenging uses of its protected characters and creative works without authorization.

      Why It Matters

Disney’s experiment illustrates a critical distinction in the emerging artificial intelligence economy: using technology with permission is different from exploiting someone else’s intellectual property. The company has invested generations of talent and substantial capital in its entertainment catalog. Its willingness to use AI does not require surrendering those assets to outside developers. Strong property rights and enforceable contracts remain essential to preserving incentives for future creative investment.

The larger question concerns workers and artistic control. Faster storyboarding could reduce production costs, revive neglected music and create opportunities for smaller creative teams. Yet automation raises legitimate concerns about diminished demand for illustrators, editors and other skilled professionals. Disney’s approach will be judged not merely by efficiency but by whether human creators retain meaningful authority over finished work. If licensed AI tools expand consumer choice without undermining ownership or craftsmanship, the experiment could offer a practical model for responsible technological innovation across entertainment industries.
