SoftBank CEO Predicts $5 Trillion Annual AI Investment Will Be Required by 2040

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son declared that the world will need to invest approximately $5 trillion annually by 2040 to build the infrastructure necessary to support the coming age of artificial intelligence, dismissing concerns that today’s AI spending represents a speculative bubble. Speaking in Tokyo, Son argued that AI will fundamentally reshape the global economy, potentially accounting for roughly 20 percent of worldwide GDP within the next decade and a half. His vision includes unprecedented investment in semiconductor manufacturing, hyperscale data centers, electrical generation, robotics, and autonomous AI agents. While supporters see the forecast as evidence that AI represents the next industrial revolution, skeptics question whether such extraordinary capital expenditures can generate sufficient returns without creating dangerous financial distortions and unprecedented concentrations of economic power.

      Key Takeaways

      • • AI industry leaders are forecasting investment levels measured in trillions of dollars annually to build the computing, semiconductor, and energy infrastructure needed for next-generation artificial intelligence.
      • • Growing electricity demand has become one of the defining challenges of AI expansion, making power generation and grid modernization as strategically important as advanced chip manufacturing.
      • • Massive private-sector investment in AI increasingly raises broader questions about market concentration, national competitiveness, infrastructure resilience, and whether projected economic returns can justify unprecedented capital expenditures.

      In-Depth

Masayoshi Son’s prediction illustrates just how dramatically expectations surrounding artificial intelligence have expanded. Only a few years ago, billions of dollars in AI investment seemed extraordinary. Today, some of the world’s largest technology companies are discussing spending measured not merely in billions, but in trillions. Such projections underscore that the AI race is no longer centered solely on software development. Victory will belong to those capable of financing enormous physical infrastructure, including advanced semiconductor fabrication, sprawling data centers, expanded electrical grids, and reliable energy generation.

Whether Son’s projections ultimately prove accurate remains uncertain. Financial history is filled with technological revolutions that attracted excessive capital before markets corrected themselves. Railroads, telecommunications, and the internet each experienced periods of speculative excess before maturing into foundational industries. Artificial intelligence may follow a similar path, delivering transformative long-term value while still producing significant short-term investment bubbles.

From a conservative perspective, the central policy question should not be whether AI deserves investment, but whether governments distort markets by subsidizing favored companies or selecting industrial winners. Innovation flourishes when private capital assumes private risk. If firms believe AI infrastructure will generate lasting returns, investors—not taxpayers—should bear both the rewards and the consequences.

The geopolitical implications are equally significant. The United States cannot afford to surrender leadership in semiconductors, computing infrastructure, or AI development to strategic competitors. Maintaining technological superiority increasingly depends upon reliable domestic energy production, streamlined permitting, modernized electrical infrastructure, and policies that encourage private investment rather than regulatory paralysis.

At the same time, policymakers should approach extravagant forecasts with healthy skepticism. Predicting that AI-related industries will eventually comprise one-fifth of global economic output assumes sustained technological progress, profitable commercialization, and affordable energy at unprecedented scale. Those conditions are far from guaranteed. The coming decade will determine whether today’s extraordinary spending represents the foundation of a new industrial age—or another reminder that even revolutionary technologies remain subject to economic reality.
