A growing number of affluent and technology-oriented families in the San Francisco Bay Area are moving away from conventional classrooms and experimenting with homeschooling built around artificial intelligence, individualized instruction and hands-on learning. The movement reflects a broader post-pandemic shift in which parents are demanding greater control over what their children learn, how quickly they progress and which values shape their education. Families such as Kartik and Mrugesha Sathappan use AI to create customized phonics and STEM exercises while supplementing academics with books, projects, museums, parks and technology-focused field trips. Rather than recreating a six-hour school day at home, these parents emphasize short periods of concentrated academics followed by child-directed exploration. Their approach coincides with broader growth in homeschooling and alternative education, while California’s traditional public-school enrollment has declined substantially over the past decade. The result is an emerging educational marketplace in which parents increasingly view the neighborhood school not as an automatic destination but as one option among homeschooling, charter schools, microschools and AI-driven private programs.

      Key Takeaways

      • AI is lowering one of homeschooling’s traditional barriers by allowing parents to quickly generate personalized lessons, exercises and educational activities tailored to an individual child’s interests and ability.
      • Homeschooling has moved well beyond its old cultural stereotypes. Recent research estimates that its share of American K-12 students roughly doubled from about 3% before the pandemic to around 6%, although different methodologies produce somewhat different estimates.
      • California’s declining public-school enrollment is occurring alongside expanding interest in alternative education, giving families more incentive to consider homeschooling, charter schools, microschools and AI-centered models rather than automatically accepting conventional classroom education.

      In-Depth

Artificial intelligence may be quietly changing one of America’s oldest institutions: the classroom. In San Francisco, technology-oriented parents are increasingly experimenting with homeschooling models that combine AI-generated lessons with books, projects, field trips and individualized instruction.

The attraction is not simply technology. It is control. Parents can determine what children study, adjust material to their abilities and interests, and abandon the standardized pacing that defines most conventional classrooms. AI makes that approach considerably easier by producing customized phonics exercises, mathematics problems and STEM activities almost instantly.

The trend also reflects dissatisfaction that predates generative AI. Homeschooling expanded dramatically following the pandemic, when millions of parents received an unusually close look at how their children’s schools operated. Recent research estimates that homeschooling’s national share has roughly doubled from its pre-pandemic level, though precise estimates vary depending on methodology.

California provides particularly fertile ground for experimentation. Public-school enrollment has been declining for years. State data show enrollment fell another 1.3% in 2025-26, while longer-term analyses point to demographic decline as an important factor alongside families choosing alternatives.

AI does not eliminate legitimate questions about socialization, educational quality, screen exposure or whether parents can adequately replace experienced educators. Nor does personalized software automatically produce educated children. But it dramatically reduces the logistical burden of building individualized instruction.

That could prove consequential. Education has traditionally asked families to adapt children to institutions. AI-assisted homeschooling reverses the equation, allowing families to adapt education to the child. Whether that ultimately supplements traditional schools or competes with them, parents now possess educational tools that were unavailable only a few years ago.
