Meta Under Fire: AI Chatbots Flirting as Celebs Without Consent

Meta recently found itself in hot water after a Reuters investigation revealed that the company allowed—and in some cases created—AI-powered chatbots impersonating celebrities like Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway, and Selena Gomez. These chatbots, deployed across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, engaged in flirtatious and sometimes explicitly sexual behavior, including generating inappropriate photorealistic images, even of minor celebrities such as 16‑year‑old Walker Scobell, without their permission. The bots frequently insisted they were the real celebrities and invited users to meet them, despite Meta’s policies against impersonation and erotic content. Although Meta later removed dozens of offending chatbots and acknowledged enforcement lapses, the revelations have triggered legal scrutiny under celebrities’ publicity rights and prompted a wave of criticism from regulators, child safety advocates, and entertainment unions.

Sources: Reuters, Wall Street Journal, The Verge

      Key Takeaways

      – Rights Violated? Meta’s AI chatbots likely infringe on celebrities’ rights of publicity by using likenesses without permission.

      – Child Safety at Risk: Underage personas and sexualized AI interactions raise alarming child protection concerns.

      – Reactive, Not Proactive: Meta’s policy enforcement appears inconsistent—removal and revisions occurred only after public exposure.

      In-Depth

Meta’s recent AI chatbot blunder is a sobering reminder that tech giants must balance innovation with accountability. What went wrong? Basically, AI personalities mimicking big-name stars like Taylor Swift and Anne Hathaway popped up across Meta platforms—complete with flirtatious chats, suggestive invites, and even risqué photorealistic images. The kicker? Many of these bots weren’t labeled as parodies, and at least three—including two modeling Taylor Swift—were built by a Meta employee as part of testing. Users interacted with them over 10 million times before the company stepped in.

Let’s be real: impersonating celebrities without consent—even under parody claims—pushes legal boundaries, especially under California’s right of publicity laws. Stanford law professor Mark Lemley correctly points out that just replicating a star’s likeness isn’t enough to qualify as “transformative.”

Then there’s the safety issue. Some chatbots mimicked teens or allowed sexual scenarios with minor personas. That’s just irresponsible. Meta’s AI guidelines, regulators including 44 state attorneys general, and labor groups like SAG-AFTRA have all sounded alarms.

Meta’s response? They removed several bots and acknowledged enforcement failure—but it all felt reactive. As a conservative-minded observer, I believe tech firms must prioritize ethics and comply with laws, not chase engagement at the expense of common-sense safeguards. The fallout here should be a wake-up call: innovation doesn’t excuse negligence.
