Meta’s Muse Pushes AI From Answering Questions to Acting on Users’ Behalf

Meta has launched Muse, a new personal artificial-intelligence agent designed not merely to answer questions but to perform real-world tasks for users, including sending emails, managing calendars, booking travel, shopping, filling out forms, making payments and pursuing longer-term projects. Available initially in the United States through a dedicated app and WhatsApp, Muse represents Meta’s bid to move AI from passive chatbot assistance toward autonomous digital agency. The company says Muse operates inside a dedicated secure virtual machine and gives users control over the applications and information it can access. Yet internal testing reportedly uncovered problems ranging from unexpected data uploads and service disconnections to potentially serious privacy exposures. The result is an important test of whether consumers will exchange considerably greater access to their digital lives for the convenience promised by increasingly autonomous AI.

      Key Takeaways

      • Muse represents a fundamental escalation in consumer AI capability: instead of simply generating information, the agent can independently carry out consequential actions across applications, including communications, purchases, travel arrangements and other transactions.
      • Meta has made security and user control central to its pitch, using dedicated virtual machines, permission controls and additional safeguards designed to supervise what the agent can do. Those protections will be critical because an autonomous agent with access to email, financial services, calendars and personal data creates substantially greater consequences when something goes wrong.
      • Meta’s enormous consumer reach could make Muse a major catalyst for mainstream adoption of autonomous AI, but reported problems during internal testing illustrate the central question facing the emerging agent economy: whether convenience and productivity gains can be delivered without requiring consumers to surrender unacceptable levels of privacy, security and control.

      In-Depth

Meta’s launch of Muse marks a consequential shift from artificial intelligence that merely answers questions to software empowered to act in the real world. Muse can work across email, calendars, shopping, travel and other services, performing tasks in the background rather than requiring users to supervise every step. That convenience is potentially transformative, but it also raises the stakes considerably. Giving an AI agent authority to communicate, purchase, schedule and interact with private information creates risks that ordinary chatbots simply do not carry.

Meta says Muse addresses those concerns through a dedicated secure virtual machine and a separate safety system that can evaluate proposed actions. Users can decide what services Muse may access and revoke permissions. The company delayed the product while strengthening security, an acknowledgment that autonomous agents require more than conventional software safeguards. Reports from internal testing nevertheless described troubling behavior, including unexpected data handling and exposure of personal information, underscoring the gap that can exist between a system’s intended controls and its behavior in practice.

The larger significance is competitive and cultural. Meta possesses an enormous consumer ecosystem and can place agentic AI directly into familiar communication habits, including WhatsApp. If Muse works reliably, it could accelerate the transition from AI as an information tool to AI as a digital proxy entrusted with everyday responsibilities.

That transition deserves scrutiny, not reflexive opposition. Innovation should be allowed to advance, but consumers should retain meaningful control over their data, accounts and financial decisions. Convenience is valuable; delegated authority demands accountability.
