Artificial intelligence promises to remove an extraordinary amount of drudgery from human life. It can summarize books, solve equations, write computer code, research historical questions, draft reports, translate languages, and explain complicated subjects in seconds. Properly used, these capabilities could represent one of the greatest expansions of human productivity since the Industrial Revolution.
But there is an uncomfortable question buried beneath all that promise: How are future generations supposed to become intelligent if artificial intelligence performs the very tasks through which intelligence is developed?
Human beings are not born knowing how to reason. Intelligence may have biological foundations, but intellectual competence is cultivated through effort. Children learn mathematics by struggling with mathematics. They learn to write by organizing confused thoughts into coherent sentences. They learn history by reading, comparing sources, remembering events, and discovering relationships between them. They learn judgment partly by making mistakes and discovering why they were wrong.
The difficulty is not incidental to education. In many respects, the difficulty is the education.
Consider writing. A student assigned a 1,500-word essay must traditionally determine what he believes, gather evidence, distinguish strong arguments from weak ones, organize those arguments, and translate thoughts into language another person can understand. The finished essay matters, but the invisible intellectual exercise required to produce it matters more.
Artificial intelligence can now perform much of that process almost instantly.
That creates a dangerous temptation to confuse the product of intelligence with intelligence itself.
A beautifully written essay generated by a machine does not necessarily demonstrate that the student submitting it understands the subject. A correct mathematical answer does not demonstrate that the person requesting it understands the mathematics. A concise summary of The Federalist Papers does not mean the reader has wrestled with Madison’s reasoning about factions, federalism, or divided government.
Civilization could therefore encounter a strange paradox: our intellectual products may become increasingly sophisticated while the people consuming them become less capable of producing those products independently.
This is not entirely new. Technology has always displaced certain human skills. Calculators reduced the need for manual arithmetic. GPS weakened our reliance on maps and geographical memory. Search engines reduced the necessity of remembering certain facts. Spellcheck diminished the penalty for poor spelling.
Yet AI is different in degree and potentially in kind because it does not merely automate a particular mechanical task. It can increasingly automate portions of reasoning itself.
That distinction should concern parents and educators.
A twelve-year-old who asks AI to explain algebra after struggling with a problem is using technology as a tutor. A twelve-year-old who asks AI to solve every algebra problem is using technology as a substitute for learning. The same machine can therefore strengthen intelligence or weaken it depending upon how it is used.
The distinction is between augmentation and substitution.
A society serious about education should embrace the first while resisting the second.
Students should certainly learn how to use artificial intelligence. Refusing to teach AI would be comparable to refusing to teach computers because previous generations used typewriters. These systems will almost certainly become embedded throughout professional life, and technological competence will matter enormously.
But education cannot become merely instruction in how to ask machines questions.
Students must first develop enough independent knowledge to recognize whether the machine’s answer makes sense.
That requires retaining some decidedly old-fashioned educational practices: reading entire books, memorizing important facts, learning vocabulary, performing mathematics without technological assistance, writing essays from scratch, debating opposing arguments, studying logic, and being required to defend conclusions verbally.
Memorization, particularly, deserves reconsideration. Modern educational theory has sometimes treated memorizing information as intellectually primitive because information can always be looked up. AI makes that argument superficially stronger but fundamentally more dangerous.
Knowledge stored outside the mind is not equivalent to knowledge stored inside it.
A person cannot meaningfully reason about American constitutional government without knowing something about the Constitution, the Revolution, federalism, the branches of government, and the historical disputes that shaped them. One cannot constantly outsource every premise of an argument and still expect sophisticated independent thought to emerge.
Thinking requires something to think with.
There is also a character question involved. Learning traditionally teaches habits extending beyond academics: patience, concentration, perseverance, humility, and tolerance for frustration. A difficult book may require hours of concentration. A complicated equation may require repeated failures. Writing something worthwhile frequently requires rewriting something mediocre.
AI eliminates much of that friction.
And friction, although unpleasant, develops human beings.
The conservative response should not be technological panic. Societies cannot preserve themselves by pretending transformative inventions do not exist. Nor should government attempt to freeze technological progress merely because institutions have not adapted to it.
The wiser approach is cultural.
Families and schools should establish circumstances in which young people must demonstrate intellectual competence without AI assistance while simultaneously teaching them how to use AI effectively once fundamental abilities have been established.
Imagine an educational model in which students first write an argument independently, then ask AI to criticize it, and finally defend which criticisms they accept or reject. Instead of replacing thought, the machine would provoke more thought. Students might solve equations manually before using AI to identify mistakes. They might read a historical document before comparing their interpretation against an AI analysis.
Under such a system, AI becomes an intellectual sparring partner rather than an intellectual prosthesis.
That distinction may determine whether artificial intelligence produces the most knowledgeable generation in history or one of the most intellectually dependent.
Every civilization eventually decides what qualities it expects its young people to develop. For centuries, education assumed that knowledge, discipline, memory, reasoning, and communication were capacities worth cultivating precisely because adults would eventually need to exercise them themselves.
Artificial intelligence challenges that assumption by offering an easier alternative: let the machine do it.
We should resist that temptation.
The ultimate purpose of education was never simply to produce correct answers. It was to produce human beings capable of discovering why an answer is correct, recognizing when it is wrong, and thinking independently when no machine—or authority—can provide one.
If future generations surrender that capacity, they may inherit machines of astonishing intelligence while possessing less of their own.
If they preserve it, AI could accomplish something far more valuable.
It could make intelligent human beings even more capable.
