Adobe has officially unveiled major updates to its video editing suite, introducing a new set of AI-powered tools in the latest version of Premiere and After Effects designed to accelerate workflows and empower creators with smarter editing capabilities. These enhancements include an AI-driven Object Mask feature that lets editors automatically create and track masks around people or objects with a simple hover-and-click action, as well as redesigned shape masks that track subjects up to 20 times faster. Adobe also integrated its Firefly Boards ideation platform directly into Premiere, enabling collaborative AI-assisted storyboarding and pre-production workflows. This rollout precedes the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where a large majority of films used Adobe Creative Cloud tools in their post-production. These upgrades are part of version 26.0 releases of both apps and form part of Adobe’s broader initiative to streamline video editing with artificial intelligence while maintaining performance and creative control at the forefront.

      Key Takeaways

      • Premiere’s new AI-powered Object Mask and faster shape mask tools remove tedious manual masking work and accelerate the editing process.
      • Firefly Boards integration brings AI-assisted planning and brainstorming directly into the editing environment.
      • These updates coincide with Adobe’s presence at Sundance 2026 and reflect the company’s continued push to integrate AI into creative workflows.

      In-Depth

Adobe’s latest software release marks a significant push into integrating AI into mainstream professional video editing, with the new enhancements to Premiere and After Effects aimed at reducing the technical burden on editors and increasing creative efficiency. Central to the update is Premiere’s new AI-powered Object Mask feature—which lets users simply hover over a subject in the frame and instantly generate a mask that tracks movement throughout the shot without the labor-intensive process of manual keyframing. This kind of automation turns what was once a painstaking, time-consuming task into a near-instant process, potentially leveling the playing field for independent creators and small production teams who may not have the resources for large post-production crews. At the same time, shape masks have been redesigned to track subjects up to 20 times more quickly than prior versions, meaning that even complex scenes can be masked and refined in a fraction of the time previously required.

Beyond masking, Adobe is tying in broader AI assistance through Firefly Boards, an ideation space powered by generative models that lets creative teams sketch, storyboard, and iterate visually before ever cutting a single frame. That integration reflects a more holistic approach to video workflows—one that bridges the gap between concept development and execution, and signals Adobe’s intent to embed AI not just in specific tools but into the fabric of its editing suite. These updates are rolling out as part of the version 26.0 releases for both Premiere and After Effects, designed to support faster editing, more intuitive creative control, and deeper collaboration among teams. Their announcement ahead of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival—where the vast majority of films are edited using Adobe’s Creative Cloud—underscores the company’s dominant position in the industry and its ongoing efforts to make professional-grade editing more accessible through intelligent automation. All of this comes at a time when competition in creative software is heating up, with rival platforms also introducing their own AI enhancements, yet Adobe’s deep integration with core industry workflows remains a strong differentiator.
