Security researchers at CloudSEK have demonstrated a clever but concerning proof-of-concept in which AI summarization tools—think email clients or browser extensions—can be duped into spitting out malicious ClickFix commands that trick users into running malware. They hide PowerShell or terminal instructions behind sneaky CSS tricks—like white-on-white text, zero-width characters, tiny font sizes, or off-screen placement—and repeat them enough so the AI can’t ignore them (a tactic dubbed “prompt overdose”). The AI faithfully includes the hidden instructions in its summary, leading well-meaning users to copy-and-paste commands that unleash ransomware or other nasties. Microsoft and others warn that this opens a fresh vector for social-engineering, and they recommend sanitizing content and training AI systems to spot prompt-injection attempts.

      Key Takeaways

      – CloudSEK’s proof-of-concept shows how hidden ClickFix prompts—buried with CSS and prompt overdose—can commandeer AI summarizers into delivering malware instructions.

      – Dark Reading highlights how AI-generated content can make such social engineering more believable and effective, since users trust summaries more than raw web pages.

      – Microsoft’s research underscores ClickFix’s growing use in the wild and underscores the need for both AI content sanitization and user/device protection measures.

      In-Depth

AI summarizers have become go-to tools for sifting through emails or web pages—but turns out they can be weaponized.

Security researchers at CloudSEK have uncovered a crafty way attackers can slip malicious ClickFix commands into these AI outputs. They embed hidden instructions in HTML—stuff you can’t see because it’s white-on-white, tiny, or placed off-screen—and repeat them over and over (“prompt overdose”) so the AI picks them up and adds them to the summary. The user gets what looks like a helpful fix, but it’s really malware waiting to be run.

Dark Reading flagged how this technique is especially risky because people tend to trust AI-generated text more than unfamiliar websites. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s analysis of ClickFix shows it’s not just theoretical—this trick has been used in campaigns delivering ransomware and info stealers, often bypassing standard defenses.

The takeaway? We need smarter AI summarization tools that pre-sanitize content and detect hidden command patterns, and we also need to keep educating users to think twice—even with AI—as social engineering keeps evolving.
