Google Courts Hollywood as AI Battle Shifts From Copyright Fights to Licensing Deals

Google is quietly working to transform its relationship with Hollywood by seeking licensing arrangements with major studios for characters, film libraries, and other intellectual property that could strengthen its generative-AI systems. The effort comes as studios simultaneously explore AI’s cost-saving potential and fight unauthorized use of copyrighted material. Google has already deepened its entertainment ties through a $75 million investment in A24 and a partnership with Darren Aronofsky’s Primordial Soup, while its Veo and Flow technologies are increasingly aimed at professional filmmakers. The emerging contest is therefore about more than AI-generated video: it concerns who controls Hollywood’s intellectual property, how creators are compensated, and whether studios can exploit new technology without surrendering valuable rights or undermining existing labor protections.

      Key Takeaways

      • Google has approached major Hollywood studios about licensing characters, film libraries, and related intellectual property for AI applications, but significant legal, contractual, and labor concerns have prevented major agreements from being completed.
      • Google is building credibility inside Hollywood rather than merely selling technology from Silicon Valley, including a $75 million investment in A24 and collaboration with Darren Aronofsky’s Primordial Soup on AI-assisted filmmaking.
      • Hollywood’s challenge is increasingly not whether AI will enter filmmaking, but under what rules: studios must balance lower production costs and new licensing revenue against copyright ownership, creator compensation, digital likeness protections, and the possibility of eliminating traditional jobs.

      In-Depth

Google is making a calculated push to turn Hollywood from an adversary into a customer, approaching major studios about licensing characters, film libraries, and metadata for artificial-intelligence systems. No major licensing agreement has emerged, reflecting unresolved questions over copyright, compensation, labor protections, and the terms technology companies expect studios to accept.

The strategy shows how quickly entertainment is moving from debating whether generative AI belongs in production to determining who controls it and who gets paid. Google has invested $75 million in A24 and partnered with Darren Aronofsky’s Primordial Soup, giving engineers feedback from filmmakers while demonstrating that tools such as Veo and Flow can become practical production technology.

For studios, the opportunity is substantial. Licensing characters could create new revenue streams, while AI-assisted production could lower costs and accelerate visual development, editing, effects, and other labor-intensive processes. Yet the risks are substantial. Hollywood remembers the early YouTube era, when copyrighted material spread faster than rights holders could control it. Studios also must honor contractual protections negotiated by writers, actors, and directors concerned about replacement, digital replicas, and uncompensated training.

That history argues for caution rather than technological resistance. AI is unlikely to disappear because established industries distrust it. The stronger approach is to establish enforceable property rights, compensation rules, consent requirements, and contractual boundaries before adoption becomes irreversible. Google wants Hollywood’s premium intellectual property to improve its technology and credibility. Hollywood should recognize that leverage and negotiate accordingly, rather than surrender valuable rights merely to avoid being left behind.
