Defense technology entrepreneur Palmer Luckey is expanding his mission to rebuild American industrial capabilities through a partnership between Anduril Industries and Qualcomm Technologies to develop BlueChip, a new line of rugged laptops designed and assembled in the United States. Initially targeting military personnel, government agencies, law enforcement and emergency responders, the computers will feature Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and emphasize durability, cybersecurity and domestic manufacturing. Production will involve Anduril’s Ohio manufacturing facility, with processors slated for fabrication in Arizona. Although the first models will incorporate foreign components, the companies intend to establish a fully domestic supply chain, reducing American dependence on overseas manufacturers for critical computing technology. The initiative represents a significant private-sector effort to restore domestic electronics production while addressing national security vulnerabilities associated with foreign-controlled supply chains.

      Key Takeaways

      • Restoring American Manufacturing: Anduril and Qualcomm are developing BlueChip laptops with the long-term objective of manufacturing every component domestically, rebuilding American industrial capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.

      • Strengthening National Security: The rugged computers will prioritize military, government and emergency-service applications, incorporating secure, locally processed artificial intelligence capabilities that reduce reliance on external cloud infrastructure.

      • Private Investment in Domestic Production: The companies are financing development without government subsidies, planning U.S. circuit-board assembly and domestically manufactured processors while targeting initial orders in 2027.

      In-Depth

Palmer Luckey, founder of defense technology company Anduril Industries, is entering the computer manufacturing industry with an ambitious initiative to restore American production of critical electronics. Through a partnership with Qualcomm Technologies, Anduril is developing BlueChip, a line of rugged laptops intended to serve military personnel, government agencies, law enforcement and emergency responders.

The initiative reflects growing national security concerns surrounding America’s dependence on foreign manufacturers for essential technology. Modern computers rely on complicated international supply chains, including components manufactured in China and Taiwan, creating potential vulnerabilities during geopolitical conflicts, trade disruptions or other emergencies.

BlueChip’s initial computers will be designed and assembled domestically, with circuit-board assembly planned at Anduril’s Arsenal-1 manufacturing facility in Ohio. Qualcomm will supply Snapdragon X Series processors, with manufacturing planned at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s Arizona facilities.

Although the ultimate objective is complete American production, achieving that goal presents substantial challenges. More than 90% of the prototype’s component procurement costs currently involve suppliers in the United States or allied countries, but exclusively American sourcing remains a longer-term ambition. Certain essential components, including display panels, lack established domestic manufacturing capacity.

Anduril is pursuing American suppliers for computer enclosures, batteries and other hardware while adapting designs to domestic production capabilities. The computers will also support artificial intelligence processing directly on the device, allowing sensitive information to remain outside commercial cloud networks.

The companies expect to begin accepting orders in 2027, initially concentrating on government and defense customers before potentially expanding into civilian markets. Development is being financed privately, without government subsidies.

Beyond introducing another computer brand, BlueChip represents an effort to demonstrate that American companies can rebuild strategically important manufacturing capabilities through private investment, technological innovation and domestic industrial development.
