Snap Settles Snapchat Addiction Lawsuit as Teen Mental Health Litigation Against Big Tech Mounts

      • Snap reached an undisclosed settlement with two teenagers who alleged that Snapchat’s addictive design contributed to depression, anxiety and eating disorders.

      • Meta, TikTok and YouTube previously settled claims in the same case, leaving all four technology companies facing continued scrutiny over their platforms’ effects on children.

      • Thousands of similar lawsuits remain pending, raising questions about corporate accountability, parental rights and whether social media companies deliberately encourage compulsive use among minors.

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, settled a lawsuit Monday, Nov. 2, brought by two teenagers who alleged that the platform’s design encouraged compulsive use and contributed to mental health problems. The plaintiffs, a 16-year-old from Illinois and an 18-year-old from Mississippi, accused social media companies of fostering addiction. Financial terms were not disclosed. Snap denied wrongdoing and said it remains committed to improving protections for young users.

The settlement removed the final defendant from a watched Los Angeles case after Meta, TikTok and YouTube reached agreements. Jury selection had begun, and Snap CEO Evan Spiegel was expected to testify. The litigation is part of thousands of claims nationwide. In March, another Los Angeles jury awarded $6 million after finding Meta and YouTube negligent. Further test cases are expected in March, leaving unresolved questions about platform responsibility, parental oversight and the legal consequences of designing products that encourage prolonged use.

      Why It Matters

Snap’s settlement underscores a growing challenge to the technology industry: Companies that profit from young users’ attention may face legal consequences when product design allegedly contributes to harm. Parents have primary responsibility for supervising their children’s online activity, but that responsibility does not excuse corporations from scrutiny over features deliberately engineered to increase screen time. Nor does a confidential settlement establish that the allegations were proved.

The larger stakes extend beyond one lawsuit. Thousands of pending claims could force technology companies to defend their business practices before juries or negotiate costly settlements. Policymakers should demand transparency about risks to minors while avoiding sweeping restrictions that undermine parental authority or lawful speech. Clear disclosures, meaningful parental controls and enforceable protections for children offer a more accountable approach than allowing companies to write their own rules. Courts, meanwhile, must distinguish documented injury from speculation and ensure liability follows evidence, not public pressure.
