AI Shopping Bots Threaten Amazon’s E-Commerce Dominance and $70 Billion Advertising Business

      • Meta‘s Muse AI shopping assistant attracted more than 10 million users in six weeks, threatening Amazon‘s dominance in online shopping and its lucrative advertising business.
      • Amazon is restricting competing AI shopping agents while expanding its own automated purchasing tools, raising questions about competition, consumer choice and marketplace control.
      • A federal appeals court ruling favoring Perplexity AI highlights growing legal challenges over whether retailers can prevent consumer-authorized AI agents from accessing their platforms.

Meta Platforms is challenging Amazon’s e-commerce dominance with Muse, an artificial intelligence shopping assistant that attracted more than 10 million users across the United States and Canada within six weeks of its September launch. The technology allows consumers to discover and purchase products without navigating traditional retail websites, potentially threatening Amazon’s nearly $70 billion annual advertising business. Amazon has blocked Muse from its marketplace, citing security and customer experience concerns, while competitors Walmart and Shopify have embraced partnerships with Meta.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy maintains that outside shopping agents have not significantly affected advertising revenue, emphasizing the company’s expanding Alexa for Shopping platform. Amazon is also developing Shop Direct and Buy For Me, enabling purchases from competing merchants. Meanwhile, litigation involving Perplexity’s Comet browser has intensified debate over automated shopping access. An August federal appeals court decision overturned an injunction against Perplexity, underscoring the emerging legal conflict between marketplace operators and consumer-directed AI technologies.

      Why It Matters

Artificial intelligence threatens to fundamentally restructure online commerce by shifting purchasing decisions away from retailers and toward automated agents acting on consumers’ instructions. For Amazon, the implications extend beyond product sales. Independent shopping assistants could undermine sponsored advertising placements, weaken customer loyalty and diminish the company’s control over purchasing behavior.

The dispute also exposes a broader question about free enterprise and consumer sovereignty: Should technology companies determine which digital tools customers may use when shopping? Amazon has legitimate interests in protecting customer information, preventing fraud and maintaining reliable transactions. However, restricting competitors while promoting proprietary AI services raises legitimate concerns about market concentration and consumer choice.

Competition, rather than corporate gatekeeping, should ultimately determine which shopping technologies succeed. Independent AI agents could deliver greater price transparency, reduce advertising influence and empower consumers to make more informed purchases. Whether Amazon adapts through innovation or continues resisting outside technology could help define the future of American digital commerce.
