Anthropic Locks In $35 Billion of AI Computing Power as Nvidia’s Reach Expands

Anthropic has agreed to a massive $35 billion cloud-computing deal with Nvidia-backed Lambda, securing roughly 350 megawatts of AI capacity at a new data center being developed in Nueces County, Texas. Nvidia is expected to hold the lease on the facility while Lambda supplies the computing capacity to Anthropic, giving the chipmaker an unusually broad role as investor, hardware supplier and infrastructure participant. The agreement comes as Anthropic rapidly accumulates computing resources to support Claude and Claude Code, adding to other enormous infrastructure commitments, including a recently reported $45 billion cloud-capacity agreement in West Virginia. The deal demonstrates that the AI race is increasingly being fought not merely over software and models, but over access to electricity, data centers and advanced processors.

      Key Takeaways

      • Anthropic’s $35 billion agreement with Lambda involves approximately 350 megawatts of computing capacity at a Texas data center being developed by Hut 8, giving Anthropic another enormous block of infrastructure for expanding Claude and Claude Code.
      • Nvidia occupies several positions in the transaction: it backs both Anthropic and Lambda, supplies the critical AI processors and reportedly will hold the lease on the underlying data center, highlighting the increasingly interconnected financial structure of the AI infrastructure boom.
      • Anthropic is aggressively securing computing capacity ahead of a potential public offering, with the Lambda agreement following other multibillion-dollar infrastructure commitments. The spending underscores a fundamental reality of the AI race: access to power, chips and data-center capacity may prove nearly as important as the models themselves.

      In-Depth

Anthropic’s $35 billion cloud-computing agreement with Lambda marks another escalation in the race to secure the physical infrastructure behind artificial intelligence. The arrangement centers on roughly 350 megawatts of capacity at a data center under development in Nueces County, Texas, with Nvidia expected to hold the lease and Lambda supplying computing resources to Anthropic.

The scale matters because AI competition is becoming an infrastructure contest. Sophisticated models cannot expand merely through better software; developers require quantities of advanced processors, electricity, cooling, networking equipment and data-center capacity. Anthropic is locking down computing resources as demand grows for Claude and Claude Code and as the company moves toward a public offering.

The deal also illustrates Nvidia’s increasingly expansive position within the AI economy. Nvidia is not simply selling processors. It has invested in both Anthropic and Lambda, while reportedly serving as tenant on the underlying Texas facility. That places Nvidia at several points in the commercial chain and has renewed investor questions about interconnected AI financing and spending.

There is nevertheless a business explanation: companies with capital are racing to secure scarce computing capacity before competitors do. Anthropic has already committed tens of billions to other infrastructure arrangements, including a recently reported $45 billion agreement involving West Virginia capacity.

The larger question is whether demand ultimately justifies commitments of this magnitude. For now, access to power, data centers and high-end chips has become a strategic asset. But elaborate financing relationships deserve scrutiny, particularly when suppliers, investors, landlords and customers become financially intertwined.
