New York City’s AI Boom Expands Offices While Entry-Level Hiring Contracts

New York City’s artificial-intelligence economy is expanding rapidly, but its benefits are not flowing evenly through the labor market, particularly to young workers trying to begin white-collar careers. AI companies leased more than 2.2 million square feet of city office space during the first half of 2026—more than double their total for all of 2025—while New York AI startups attracted a record $16.7 billion in venture capital in 2025, second only to the San Francisco Bay Area. At the same time, entry-level hiring has weakened sharply in technology and other AI-exposed fields. Separate research found entry-level tech postings in New York City have fallen 49 percent since 2022, while postings in occupations with the greatest exposure to generative AI declined 29 percent compared with a 21 percent increase among occupations with minimal exposure. The numbers point to a fundamental restructuring rather than a simple technology-sector contraction: companies continue investing heavily in AI, office space and experienced talent while demanding greater AI proficiency from new workers and reducing some of the traditional junior positions that once served as gateways to professional careers.

      Key Takeaways

      • AI companies leased more than 2.2 million square feet of New York City office space during the first half of 2026, while the city’s AI startups raised a record $16.7 billion in venture capital during 2025.
      • Entry-level tech job postings in New York City have declined 49 percent since 2022, while entry-level postings for occupations most exposed to generative AI fell 29 percent compared with a 21 percent increase for occupations with minimal AI exposure.
      • The labor market is increasingly rewarding AI proficiency: entry-level postings requiring AI skills have risen 20 percent since 2022, while a separate survey found 86 percent of New York business leaders prioritize candidates with AI skills and 57 percent are reducing entry-level positions because of AI and automation.

      In-Depth

New York City’s artificial-intelligence boom presents a striking economic contradiction. AI companies are pouring money into offices, startups and specialized talent, yet the traditional first rung of the white-collar career ladder is becoming harder for young workers to reach.

In the first half of 2026, AI companies leased more than 2.2 million square feet of New York office space, more than twice their total for all of 2025. AI startups raised $16.7 billion in venture capital during 2025. Those numbers demonstrate genuine private-sector confidence in New York as an AI center, not merely speculative enthusiasm.

The labor market tells a more complicated story. Entry-level tech job postings in the city have fallen 49 percent since 2022. Positions with the greatest exposure to generative AI recorded a 29 percent decline in entry-level postings, while jobs with minimal AI exposure increased 21 percent. Meanwhile, entry-level postings specifically requiring AI skills increased 20 percent.

That distinction matters. The evidence does not establish that AI alone caused the hiring decline; higher capital costs, economic uncertainty and post-pandemic adjustments have also affected employers. But companies clearly are demanding different capabilities from new workers. One survey found 86 percent of New York business leaders prioritize candidates with AI skills, while 57 percent are reducing entry-level positions because of AI and automation.

The challenge is not stopping technological progress. It is ensuring education and workforce training respond quickly enough that young Americans can compete. New York’s experience suggests AI may create wealth and productivity while simultaneously forcing workers to acquire valuable skills earlier in their careers.
