Federal safety regulators have launched an investigation into over 174,000 2021 Tesla Model Y vehicles amid reports that their electronic exterior door handles failed—leaving parents unable to open them from the outside to attend to children in the back seat. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is particularly concerned about incidents involving low-voltage (12V) battery issues: owners say they saw no warnings before handles went inoperative. In at least four of the nine reported cases, people resorted to breaking windows to reach children. While Tesla vehicles do feature manual interior door releases, the regulator notes that children may neither be able to find nor use them. This preliminary probe could lead to a recall depending on how widespread and severe the issue is.

Sources: Reuters, AP News, Financial Times

      Key Takeaways

      – Safety Hazard with No Warning: The investigations suggest that exterior door handle failure may result from low or insufficient voltage in the vehicle’s 12-volt battery, and importantly, owners reported no warning signals before the failure.

      – Risk of Entrapment: Children are especially at risk because, even though there are manual interior releases, these may be hard to reach or understand. In multiple incidents, windows had to be broken to get children out.

      – Regulatory & Liability Implications: With over 174,000 vehicles under scrutiny, Tesla may be facing a costly recall if NHTSA deems the issue severe enough. The company’s reputation for safety and its approach to electronics-reliant mechanisms are under renewed examination.

      In-Depth

Tesla’s latest regulatory headache comes from a seeming oversight in electronic door handle design—one that has become a safety concern big enough to draw federal scrutiny. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a formal investigation into roughly 174,000 units of the 2021 Tesla Model Y, prompted by at least nine complaints where the electronic exterior door handles were reported to go inoperative without warning. In some of these cases, the failures meant parents or guardians couldn’t reopen the vehicle from outside to get to children in the rear seats. The breaches in design were serious enough that in four instances, people said they had to break windows to gain access.

At the heart of the issue is what appears to be low voltage in the 12-volt battery system, which supplies power to the electronic locking/unlocking mechanism of the doors. Reports indicate that in affected vehicles, this voltage dropped without prior warning, rendering the exterior electronic handles useless until battery replacement. Tesla does include manual interior door releases, but regulators warn that children may not be able to reach or operate them—especially under stress or in emergency situations. This raises questions about whether Tesla’s manual override is a sufficient safety backup.

For Tesla, success with electric vehicles has often been tied to bold design and pushing the envelope in terms of aesthetics and technology—but this case underscores that design decisions involving power dependency carry risk. If NHTSA’s investigation deems the defect a safety hazard, Tesla may be required to issue a recall or else face liability and reputational damage. It’s not just about fixing broken handles; it’s about ensuring that safety features are intuitive, accessible, and fail-safe, especially when children are involved. As electric vehicles become more common, this incident could set precedents for how regulators demand redundancy and warning systems for electronic components that, if they fail, threaten human safety.
