AI Joins the Search for America’s Missing War Dead

Artificial intelligence is being brought into the decades-long effort to account for Americans who disappeared in past wars, giving investigators a new way to sift enormous collections of military records, archival material, maps, photographs and other historical evidence. The initiative comes as the United States continues trying to identify tens of thousands of service members still unaccounted for from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War and other conflicts. AI cannot replace forensic scientists, historians or field investigators, but it can dramatically accelerate the labor-intensive process of finding connections buried in millions of documents. The technology could help researchers narrow possible locations, connect individuals to military units and incidents, and identify records that deserve human investigation. The effort represents a particularly constructive application of AI: using modern computational power to fulfill an old national commitment to American service members and their families.

      Key Takeaways

      • AI can rapidly examine digitized military records and historical archives that would require investigators years to review manually, potentially identifying connections among personnel, units, aircraft, battle locations and previously overlooked evidence.
      • The technology supplements rather than replaces traditional POW/MIA work. Physical recovery, historical verification, anthropology, dental analysis and DNA testing remain essential before a missing American can officially be identified.
      • The effort arrives as the government and private research partners increasingly digitize historical records and employ advanced analytical technologies, potentially opening cases that have remained unresolved for more than 80 years.

      In-Depth

America’s obligation to account for its missing service members is entering the artificial-intelligence era. Investigators are beginning to use AI to attack one of the central problems confronting POW/MIA researchers: an overwhelming quantity of fragmented historical information.

The challenge is formidable. A single unresolved case can involve unit reports, casualty lists, maps, eyewitness statements, aircraft records, burial documents and foreign archives. Relevant information may be scattered across collections assembled by different governments and military organizations over decades. AI offers researchers the ability to search and correlate those records at a scale previously impossible.

The federal accounting effort has already been moving toward digitization and AI-assisted research. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and international partners have been digitizing decades-old material to accelerate investigations. Once researchers identify a promising case or location, however, technology does not eliminate the difficult work that follows. Teams may still have to investigate battlefields, excavate crash sites or graves, recover remains and submit evidence for laboratory examination. Identification can require anthropology, dental evidence, circumstantial records and sophisticated DNA analysis.

That distinction matters. AI is most valuable as an investigative multiplier, not an unquestionable authority. Historical records can contain errors, contradictory reports and incomplete information, meaning machine-generated conclusions still require verification.

Used responsibly, however, AI could give investigators something extraordinarily valuable: time. Instead of spending months manually searching archives for connections, researchers can concentrate on verifying the most promising leads. For families who have waited generations for answers, accelerating that process is more than technological progress. It advances a longstanding national promise that Americans lost in service to the country will not simply be forgotten.
