Amazon Raises Starting Pay to $20 an Hour and Expands Worker Benefits

Amazon is raising the minimum starting wage for eligible full-time U.S. core operations employees by $1 to $20 an hour, pushing average hourly pay for those workers to nearly $24 and average total compensation above $32 an hour when benefits are included. The increase, effective September 27, represents an investment of more than $1.5 billion and comes as the company prepares for the critical holiday shopping season. Amazon is also expanding its benefits package with grocery discounts beginning October 1 and a new lifetime banking program for qualified employees and their families. The changes reinforce a broader private-sector competition for dependable hourly labor, with Amazon using wages, healthcare, education, discounts, and financial services to attract and retain workers rather than relying solely on headline hourly pay.

      Key Takeaways

      • Amazon will increase minimum starting pay for eligible full-time core operations workers from $19 to $20 an hour beginning September 27, while average hourly pay will rise to nearly $24. Including benefits, Amazon says average total compensation exceeds $32 an hour.
      • Beginning October 1, U.S. employees will receive an uncapped 10% discount on eligible groceries and everyday essentials purchased online through Amazon and Whole Foods, plus 20% off purchases at physical Whole Foods stores. Those discounts can be combined with existing Prime discounts.
      • Amazon is also introducing Day 1 Financial, giving qualified employees, spouses, and children access to First Tech Federal Credit Union services that can continue for life, including checking and savings accounts without monthly maintenance or overdraft fees and without requiring a credit history to open those accounts.

      In-Depth

Amazon is putting another $1.5 billion into its American operations workforce, raising minimum starting pay for eligible full-time core operations employees to $20 an hour while pushing average wages to nearly $24. The increase takes effect September 27 and applies to workers performing many of the nuts-and-bolts jobs that keep the company’s enormous fulfillment and transportation system operating.

The move is notable because Amazon is increasingly competing for workers through total compensation rather than wages alone. With benefits included, the company calculates average compensation at more than $32 an hour. Amazon already provides eligible workers with benefits including healthcare, free Prime membership, prepaid education programs and a 401(k) with a company match.

The latest additions broaden that strategy. Beginning October 1, every U.S. Amazon employee will have access to substantial grocery discounts, including 20% off purchases inside Whole Foods stores and 10% off eligible groceries and everyday essentials purchased online. Unlike a limited annual employee coupon, Amazon says the discounts are uncapped.

Perhaps more consequential over the long term is Day 1 Financial. Qualified workers and their families will gain access to First Tech Federal Credit Union, including no-fee checking and savings options, credit-building programs and other financial services. Membership can continue after employment ends.

The larger story is straightforward: a competitive labor market rewards companies capable of attracting workers voluntarily with better compensation and useful benefits. Amazon’s decision puts additional competitive pressure on major employers to demonstrate that an hourly job offers more than a paycheck, particularly as companies compete for reliable workers ahead of the holiday season.
