      A Scottish wave-energy company is proposing a novel solution to one of artificial intelligence’s fastest-growing infrastructure challenges: relocating data centers from land to the open sea. Mocean Energy’s “Blue Core” concept envisions floating, modular data centers powered primarily by wave energy supplemented by solar power and battery storage, while using cold seawater for natural cooling. The company argues that offshore facilities could ease pressure on increasingly congested electrical grids, reduce land-use conflicts, lower cooling costs, and provide sovereign computing infrastructure within national waters. The proposal comes as governments and technology companies confront rapidly rising electricity demands from AI computing, with grid connection queues and community opposition delaying many conventional data center projects. While the concept remains in the developmental stage, with pilot deployment targeted for 2028 and commercial expansion thereafter, it represents an attempt to address both the energy and political constraints surrounding AI infrastructure.

Rather than forcing AI infrastructure onto already crowded electrical grids, the company intends to place self-powered computing modules offshore, harvesting wave energy while supplementing generation with solar panels and battery storage. Cold seawater would dramatically reduce cooling requirements, one of the largest operating expenses for conventional data centers. If successful, the approach could eliminate several of the biggest obstacles facing AI infrastructure expansion: land acquisition, grid congestion, and local opposition.

      The concept, however, should be viewed with measured optimism rather than unquestioning enthusiasm. Offshore environments are notoriously harsh, exposing equipment to corrosion, storms, saltwater intrusion, and expensive maintenance. Reliable satellite connectivity, physical security, long-term serviceability, and economic competitiveness must all be demonstrated before investors or major cloud providers embrace the model.

      Nevertheless, conservative observers who favor practical innovation over heavy-handed government mandates may see value in allowing private companies to pursue market-driven solutions. If offshore renewable-powered data centers prove technically and economically viable, they could expand AI capacity without placing additional burdens on taxpayers, existing electrical infrastructure, or communities increasingly unwilling to host massive new data-center developments.
