Radiant has secured a long-term agreement with Standard Nuclear to supply TRISO nuclear fuel for its 1-megawatt Kaleidos portable microreactor through the early 2030s, eliminating one of the largest obstacles facing advanced reactor commercialization. The agreement provides a dedicated domestic fuel source as the company advances full-scale testing at Idaho National Laboratory and prepares for commercial production. With early customer commitments already in place from both government and private-sector partners, the announcement highlights the growing momentum behind portable nuclear technology while underscoring the strategic importance of building a reliable American nuclear fuel supply chain.

      Key Takeaways

      • Radiant secured a critical fuel supply agreement that provides TRISO fuel for Kaleidos microreactors through the early 2030s, reducing a major commercialization risk.
      • Fuel security is emerging as the decisive competitive advantage for advanced reactor developers, as dependable HALEU and TRISO production remain limited throughout the industry.
      • Commercial and defense demand continues to grow, with portable microreactors increasingly viewed as practical power sources for remote infrastructure, military installations, and critical facilities.

      In-Depth

Radiant’s agreement with Standard Nuclear represents more than a supply contract—it addresses one of the greatest challenges confronting America’s advanced nuclear industry. Innovative reactor designs have attracted significant investment over the past several years, but many projects have remained constrained by uncertainty surrounding the availability of specialized nuclear fuel. By locking in TRISO fuel fabrication through the early 2030s, Radiant has strengthened its position as it moves Kaleidos toward commercial deployment.

The Kaleidos microreactor is designed to generate approximately one megawatt of power while remaining transportable by conventional land, sea, or air transportation. Each reactor is expected to operate for up to five years before refueling, making it attractive for remote installations, military bases, disaster recovery operations, and critical infrastructure where dependable, around-the-clock electricity is essential. Radiant also intends to retain responsibility for fueling, refueling, and spent-fuel management rather than placing those burdens on customers.

The announcement comes as full-scale testing proceeds at Idaho National Laboratory’s DOME facility, where engineers will evaluate the reactor under real operating conditions before pursuing broader commercial deployment. The company has already secured commercial interest, including agreements involving data center infrastructure and defense applications, demonstrating that demand exists if the technology proves reliable.

More broadly, the agreement reflects a renewed emphasis on rebuilding America’s domestic nuclear fuel capability. Industry analysts have consistently identified HALEU and TRISO fuel production as potential bottlenecks for advanced reactors. As additional developers secure long-term fuel arrangements and domestic manufacturing expands, the United States is positioned to strengthen both its energy security and its leadership in next-generation nuclear technology.
