OpenAI plans to end Cursor’s access to its artificial-intelligence models on November 12 following SpaceX‘s $60 billion acquisition of the AI coding company, citing concerns that Elon Musk-controlled businesses may not honor its contractual terms. Importantly, OpenAI has not accused Cursor itself of violating its agreement; instead, it points to prior disputes involving Musk companies, including Twitter and xAI. Cursor says OpenAI models represent only about 5% of its user traffic and is discussing the decision with OpenAI, suggesting the practical impact may be limited even as the episode further intensifies the long-running rivalry between Musk and OpenAI leadership.

      Key Takeaways

      • OpenAI intends to terminate Cursor’s model access on November 12, using contractual rights triggered by SpaceX’s acquisition, despite acknowledging that Cursor itself has not violated the agreement.
      • The decision reflects OpenAI’s broader distrust of Musk-controlled companies, with OpenAI citing previous contractual problems involving Twitter and xAI as evidence that continuing the relationship presents unacceptable risks.
      • Cursor appears positioned to withstand the cutoff: OpenAI models reportedly generate only about 5% of Cursor traffic, while the $60 billion SpaceX acquisition provides the company with substantial computing infrastructure and greater opportunity to develop alternatives.

      In-Depth

OpenAI’s decision to terminate Cursor’s access to its models after SpaceX acquired the coding platform turns a business contract into another front in the escalating conflict between Sam Altman and Elon Musk. OpenAI says Cursor itself has not violated its agreement. Instead, the company argues that prior conduct by Musk-controlled businesses creates enough risk to justify invoking a change-of-control provision and ending model access on November 12.

That distinction matters. OpenAI is effectively making a prospective judgment about SpaceX based on the record of other Musk enterprises. It points to Twitter’s previous contractual dispute over data access and Musk’s acknowledgment that xAI had, at least in part, distilled OpenAI model outputs. OpenAI also says its forthcoming Astra model raises the stakes because increasingly capable systems require stronger assurances that contractual restrictions will be honored.

Cursor, however, is hardly trapped. Its cofounder Michael Truell says OpenAI models account for only about 5 percent of Cursor user traffic, while the platform also offers models from Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI. SpaceX’s $60 billion acquisition additionally gives Cursor access to enormous computing resources that could accelerate development of proprietary models and reduce dependence on outside suppliers.

The broader story is therefore bigger than a canceled contract. The artificial-intelligence industry is rapidly consolidating around competing corporate ecosystems controlling models, computing infrastructure, applications, and distribution. OpenAI’s move may protect its technology and contractual leverage, but it also risks pushing Cursor more firmly into Musk’s vertically integrated AI operation. Competition, rather than cooperation, is defining the industry.
