Apple Raises Streaming Prices Again as Subscription Costs Keep Climbing

Apple is raising prices across another portion of its services business, increasing Apple TV from $12.99 to $14.99 per month and its annual subscription from $99 to $119, while the individual Apple One bundle rises from $19.95 to $21.95 monthly. The increases continue a remarkable escalation since Apple TV launched in 2019 at just $4.99 per month and follow a separate July increase in Apple Music pricing. Apple is hardly alone: major streaming competitors have repeatedly increased subscription prices, particularly for ad-free service. The broader trend illustrates how the streaming revolution that once promised consumers a cheaper alternative to traditional television is steadily evolving into another collection of recurring household expenses. Apple enters this latest round of increases from a position of considerable financial strength, having reported record June-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, aided by sharply higher iPhone sales and record Mac revenue.

      Key Takeaways

      • Apple TV now costs $14.99 monthly or $119 annually, while the individual Apple One bundle increases to $21.95 per month, continuing a series of increases that has taken Apple TV from its original $4.99 monthly launch price to nearly three times that amount.
      • The increase is part of a much broader streaming-industry pattern in which consumers have watched the low-cost promise of streaming steadily erode as providers increase subscription prices, charge premiums for ad-free viewing, and divide desirable programming among competing services.
      • Apple is imposing the increases despite formidable financial performance, including record June-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, highlighting how subscription services have become an increasingly important source of dependable recurring revenue rather than merely an inexpensive complement to the company’s hardware ecosystem.

      In-Depth

Apple’s latest subscription increases demonstrate how dramatically the economics of streaming have changed since companies began positioning internet television as the inexpensive alternative to cable. Apple TV will now cost $14.99 monthly, compared with $12.99 previously, while the annual subscription climbs from $99 to $119. The individual Apple One package rises from $19.95 to $21.95 monthly.

The increases are particularly striking when viewed against Apple TV’s history. The service debuted in 2019 at $4.99 per month. Consumers are now being asked to pay roughly three times that amount. Apple has expanded its programming considerably, including original series and valuable sports rights, but customers ultimately must decide whether that additional content justifies another recurring increase.

Apple is not operating in isolation. Streaming competitors have repeatedly raised prices, while several services increasingly differentiate between advertising-supported and more expensive ad-free plans. The result looks increasingly familiar to consumers who originally abandoned cable because of rising bills and bundled programming.

There is also little indication that Apple needs higher prices simply to weather financial distress. The company reported record June-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, helped by a 22 percent increase in iPhone sales and record Mac revenue.

From a free-market perspective, Apple has every right to charge whatever customers are willing to pay. Consumers possess the equally important right to cancel. That discipline is ultimately healthier than government price controls or regulatory interference. The larger question is whether subscription fatigue will finally force streaming companies to compete more aggressively on price rather than assuming customers will quietly absorb one increase after another.
